Finally got the next “Frank & Ludwig” sock puppet video finished last night. Grace and her sister Laura chipped in and really helped raise the production values. Grace created a “Sally” puppet that is as goofy and loud as I imagined the character would be, and Laura provided the perfect voice and puppetry. Grace also engineered the horn prop we needed, as well as the initial idea for the story…

A goof on the DWS “Frank & Ludwig” ads

If you’ve been to the Dallas Wind Symphony site lately you’ve seen the viral-style YouTube ad on the main page featuring “Frank and Ludwig” in a decidedly low-tech campaign. I decided to try one myself but my devious sense of humor and irrepressible cynicism got in the way immediately. The result is definitely NOT ready for prime time:

Update (09/02/08): Well, the guys in the DWS office loved the video much to my surprise, so I reshot the video and it is posted on the DWS main page now.

Oh Wait… I Have A Quarter!

Torture a teen today! More and more kids working in shops and fast food places simply can’t make change without mechanical help. Poor dears. I’m doing my little bit to help; won’t you? When I’m at the counter paying cash I like to hand over my bill, pause just long enough for the cashier to punch it into the register, then say, “Oh wait… I have a quarter!” Then the fun begins.

They stare at my quarter, then at the register, and then I get to watch the wheels start turning as they try to figure out how much change to give back now that the register can’t help them. Sometimes I can almost see smoke coming out of their ears. “Twenty dollars… and twenty five cents… minutes fifteen twenty-three. Are you kidding?! Figure that out in my head?” I figure they just need some practice, and I’m more than happy to help with that.

And yes, I realize that not all the arithmetically-challenged people are under the age of 24. And that’s just sad, especially when part of your job involves running a cash register.

We need to increase awareness. Maybe we need a National “Oh Wait… I Have A Quarter” Day!

Boycott the Glen Rose Dairy Queen

We took a trip down to Wimberley, TX last weekend to visit Grace’s long-lost Uncle Bob & Aunt Cindy (long story, maybe another time). Spent the weekend riding around his goat ranch on 4-wheeler ATV’s… lots of fun! 1000 acres of creeks, caves and cactus to explore.

Oh, and please spread the word: Boycott the Dairy Queen in Glen Rose! Grace, her sister Laura and their mother determined on a recent visit that this location violates two of the most important requirements of a Texas Dairy Queen:

They serve instant iced tea
They do not carry Buster Bars

Update: Several visitors have reported that these problems have been corrected. Glad to hear it. This blog entry will remain, however, mainly because I’m so proud of the road sign graphic I made.

Neither of these transgressions would cause the health department to shut them down or even cause much of a ruckus down at corporate HQ, but they are nonetheless a slap in the face to any Texas Dairy Queen customer. That just ain’t how it’s done, buckaroos.

My march Texas Star was featured as March of the Day on WRR-FM 101.1 last Friday. It usually gets played this time of year in conjunction with the opening of the Great State Fair of Texas.

Getting married this weekend; everything seems to be in order. Looks like clear skies although it may be a little warm. We sent out an email last week to everyone with directions and a Q&A section I thought was pretty cute…

FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Your invitation said “No gifts please” – that was just a polite suggestion, right?

Grace’s answer: Your presence is your gift to us; we just want you to come and enjoy the evening.
David’s answer: Anyone arriving with a wrapped package will be turned over to Homeland Security agents for possible cavity search and the package detonated by a Navy EOD team.

Q: What the heck does “dressy casual” mean?

Grace’s answer: I complicated this issue way more than I meant to. Our idea was to have a cocktail party atmosphere, relaxed, fun, and informal. We want you to be comfortable but still look nice in the photos!
David’s answer: Grace told me what to wear. The rest of you are on your own.

Q: What time is the actual ceremony?

Grace’s answer: The ceremony will begin between 7:00 and 7:15. You can arrive anytime after 6:30, relax, have a drink and enjoy the sunset.
David’s answer: Arrive before 7 and you’re cool. By 7:05 you may have missed
it.

Q: Will there be a sit-down dinner?

Grace’s answer: There is no formal dinner but there will be lots of appetizers and bite-sized desserts, along with wine, champagne, beer and soft drinks.
David’s answer: …so don’t be afraid to come hungry (unless you’re a really picky eater).

Q: Is Grace’s foot healed and ready to walk down the aisle?

Grace’s answer: The doctors say I am doing great and I am getting around just fine!
David’s answer: There is no aisle. Hard to explain. You’ll see when you get here.

Q: Did you hire a live band or a DJ?

Grace’s answer: The Arboretum has a restriction on live music, limiting bands to just three people, unplugged. We decided instead to put together our own recorded music. We’ve chosen beautiful romantic love songs recorded by various artists, including our musician friends. We hope you’ll dance the night away!
David’s answer: I’d trust a DJ about as far as I could throw him. And it’s gonna kill me to leave my sax at home, but it’s for the best.
